I dont want my MacOS desktop to be forced to conform to small screen and handheld device conventions. I don’t like this change.

When I want to change to heic, conversion is done but error appears (and stops processing of more images). :-(
It is independent on language used (here it is Czech).

Yes, I know, clever people can tell that the bounce was not real. But 99% of the time it worked perfectly to stop many annoying emails. That’s why I find myself still using OS 10.6.8. Bounce works perfectly there.

This wouldn’t be so bad if you were able to specify how you wanted the search to behave like you can in Outlook but, so far, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious way of doing this.

After the last upgrade everything is in a list and I want the icons back. Is it possible to do this? I hate the list.

Comment on Online vs. Offline Editing: Why You Still Need to Consider Proxy Videos by Loren S. Miller https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/83284-online-vs-offline-editing-why-you-still-need-to-consider-proxy-videos/#comment-262149 Sat, 19 Nov 2022 15:10:13 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=83284#comment-262149 Coming late to this great article, (and don’t get me started on the look and feel of The Expanse!) but the identification of editors as “offline or “online” is archaic, with a kind “inferior craft racism” connotation to the term “Offline.”

In your technical context discussing proxy workflows and equipment, it’s perfectly valid, but you give exactly one line to describe what Offline editing really is…

“This is what the offline editing stage is all about, crafting our story so it is the best and clearest it can be.”

That’s certainly part of storyline editing in a nutshell. Both stages require different forms of technical mastery and aesthetics. Many, many editors do both because, as you rightly describe, the machinery is arriving to host high resolution content. As a small shop, I’m in that ballpark. The real distinction lies between the functions assigned to each kind of editor, and it’s worth redefining how to identify them.

Storyline editing is the fundamental story-building process from scratch or director’s outline, or paper cut, to various midcuts, revisions, and fine cut prepared for onlining. Onlining doesn’t exist without it. “Offline” editors should be identified as Editors, or Storyline Editors.

Many online editors began their careers this way. Many continue to build their storyline skills without much interest in onlining. Today, as you describe, online work has become the second of two major editing phases. But each is dependent on the other for a saleable product.

Online editing requires skill at image engineering, with a solid understanding of equipment capabilities, connections, colorspace and gamma, grading, amazing range of skills for rescuing white balance goofs; denoising or adjusting bad comps; anonymizing people and license plates in motion; windowed color adjustments; special effects; sometimes audio rescue work, title design; and legalizing for delivery– all crucial to the final product.

Many storyline editors have been led into this phase in part or whole. There’s nothing quite like watching an experienced onliner deliver the final product look and feel.

Many producers and companies like to cubbyhole talent into “offline” and “online” rooms, to leverage different strengths they discern in each individual– sometimes at a notable salary and equipment difference. But that’s an old-school workspace where storyline and online editing become clearly distinguished.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Best, as always,
Loren

Comment on How to Use Boot Camp on an External Drive to Run Windows on a Mac by Colin Wilson https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/40947-tech-tip-how-to-use-boot-camp-on-an-external-drive/#comment-262035 Sat, 19 Nov 2022 02:51:46 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=40947#comment-262035 Hi
I tried to follow your instructions, but I guess its for earlier versions of mac ?
I’me tring to install on an external drive like I used to with a mid 2011 imac 12,2 27inch.

The model I am using now is an iMac (Retina, 27-inch, 2017) 4.2GHz Quad-Core Intel i7 with a Radeon Pro 580 8GB unfortuanetly it ha a 2TB Fusion drive.

If I use the bog standard Bootcamp installer it loads the Latest Bootcamp Drivers Prior to installation & then installs them automatically after it has installed Windows 10 I have no choice of the Bootcamp Drivers installing untill after Logging into My Windows account with NO WI-FI or blutooth drivers; that in itself is bad enough but my routers in the loft and requires roughly 50ft of ETHERNET CABLE to be plugged in before I am able to use any online updates or regerstering my account.

After it completes all of the Bootcamp Drivers and Windows 10 Updates, it runs like an absolute SLUG as bootcamp won’t load onto the 128GB NVME ssd drive; it will only load onto the Main spinny HD, meaning I have a MASSIVE drop of Performance between macOS Monterey & Windows.

I have even disabled CSR to try and bypass the countless failed downloads of Bootcamp support software to no avail; the message is always the same “DOWNLOAD COULD NOT CONTINUE. Anerror occurred while downloading Windows Support Software.

Which is probable down to the A1 Chip ??? and Apples refusal to install Windows on external drives; it appears in my case that its Bootcamp or nothing.

I did experiment a bit by cloning macOS Monterey onto an external SSD drive that only suffered a minimall loss of read write speeds; and loaded windows 10 directly onto the 128GB NVME and loaded all the data as a logical drive, I also tried it out as setting it up as a dynamic drive.

This worked fine until apple in their great wisdom desided it was time to upgrade Safari; and that update; completely screwed the whole system and my experimental confifuration completely, with apple quoting that macOS monterey cold not be installed on a Split Fusion Drive or external Drive.

Apart from removing the good old Apple Glued Screen and replacing the 128GB NVME for a much larger version and throwing the old Spinny 2TB HD over my shoulder and installing a Propper SSD drive, has anyone got a better idea; or is it a case of the trusty old sledehammer ??

I had an issue updating Ventura 13.0 to 13.0.1 that was solved by resetting the SMC, which can also be done by unplugging the computer and wait some seconds before turning back on.

Comment on 6 Ways You Can Use an Old or Refurbished Mac Mini by Jeremy https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/76875-6-ways-you-can-use-an-old-or-refurbished-mac-mini/#comment-261968 Fri, 18 Nov 2022 20:16:58 +0000 https://eshop.macsales.com/blog/?p=76875#comment-261968 In reply to Greg Raven.

I use Apple remote desktop when I’m on my LAN or have a VPN connection when not physically at home (can’t use my personal VPN from my work device). I’ve also used Chrome Remote Desktop for many years to connect to other non-Apple devices and have generally had a great experience with it, being an unpaid solution. However, recently I’ve noticed when connecting to my Mac Mini (2018 running Mojave), I can see the desktop and can interact with apps until I need to read the contents of any menu (top menu, contextual, etc.). When simply right-clicking on the desktop, the contextual menu will display but appears that the contents of the menu are absent (appears as a gray rounded rectangle box). When moving the cursor through these menus, I can see that the commands are available to choose but I’m essentially doing this blind unless I have them memorized. Has anyone else experienced this?

Absolutely. The main thing to know is that iCloud Backup is still the only way to fully backup the iPad to the cloud at a system level. And if you are backing up a lot of data, you will likely want the 2TB iCloud plan.

When it comes to files and projects, you can opt for syncing files and folders via iCloud or another cloud service, or you can manually backup your files to drives. Unfortunately there are no third-party services such as Backblaze that automatically backup drives to the cloud when they are connected. However, when it comes to video editing, most are accustomed to the 3-2-1 method anyway and are doing redundant drive backups. That method isn’t hindered by the iPad at all thanks to the Thunderbolt support.
